He came into his Mommy’s life in Florida when she was a Sophomore in College. A 1.5 lb. bundle of joy! He was a gift for her birthday – not the typical college gift but than again it wasn’t a typical college experience for Champ’s new guardian who was living off campus. Champ’s Mom is a huge dog lover and always had a Golden Retriever in her life but Champ was the first small dog she owned. A little hesitant at first because big dog lovers always tend to think of a small dog as "yappy“. A cuddly, always looking for attention puppy, it was love at first sight at only 6 weeks old.
CHAMP was purchased at a puppy store in Florida, originally from Missouri and it is almost certain he came from a puppy mill. Although CHAMP is loved to bits, it has always been his guardians mission to encourage others to adopt and is a huge supporter of the ASPCA.
CHAMP’s life in the beginning was a little unstable since he was on a college ride with his guardian moving from place to place. In the 12 years of his life he has been through marriage, divorce, love and death including 12 addresses in 4 different states from FL, CA, NH, NY and almost a move to the UK. HOWEVER! As long as he had his stuffed doggy (now 12 yrs. old), CHAMP remained a trooper no matter what part of the country he was living in. After CHAMP’s Mommy graduated college, they went to live with his Grandmother and her Golden Retriever. Still to this day CHAMP confuses everyone as to why he just isn’t fond of your friendly neighborhood Retriever. Always a happy, ready to play, hyper pup, CHAMP’s mom remembers coming home to magazines and newspaper torn up all over the house. How can such a small pup make such a mess!!? CHAMP is a lovable guy and gets along very well with the average human but it’s a bit of a challenge when he is around other dogs. He was always a pal to his furry kind, but it was a day at an ASPCA event that changed things. “It must have been sensory overload”, his Mom remembers, “He just couldn’t take the environment full of pups!” Don’t let his bark scare you away because it only takes CHAMP a little time to get to know another dog and he becomes their pal.
CHAMP has been through so much with his Mommy and she can say that he is the only dog out of 4 others that she has felt most connected with. Currently CHAMP has been in NY for 7 years moving to Brooklyn via Manhattan. It was a concern that he couldn’t adapt since he’s always been used to a grassy yard but settling in Brooklyn has been the best choice. He now has a big park to play in right outside his door!
